Our fabric is eliminated from the planet in about 5 years, whilst other fibers take decades to decompose. It breaks down into organic matter (biomass) and biogas; both of these can then be exploited as new environmental resources as well as being used to cogenerate electricity.
Mana Threads fabrics secret is its enhanced polyamide 6.6 formula. They are made with a polyamide yarn with enhanced biodegradability.
As demonstrated by laboratory biodegradation tests in accordance with ASTM D5511*, our fabric biodegrades in around 5 years when disposed of in landfills, compared to more than 50 years for synthetics in general.
Our fabric’s technology is part of a new generation of sustainable yarns coming from a process that respects the environment. This care for the planet is present in the reuse of water used in its manufacturing process and in the reduction of greenhouse gases, which are treated prior to being released into the environment, thus preserving the ozone layer and nature.
Our fabric is not just biodegradable, it's designed to perform. It's soft, breathable, easy to care for, and UPF 50+. It is also STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certified meaning it is free of toxins and completely safe for your skin.
At Mana Threads, we believe sustainability doesn't have to be boring! Inspired by founder Amelia Leme's home country of Brazil, our patterns are bold in print and vibrant in color. We blend Vermont heart with Brazilian soul.
In addition to the ecological and sustainable properties, Mana Threads fabric meets all the market needs , is easily dyed into different colors and also offers advantages such as:
Softness
Comfort
Quality
Moisture Absorption
Breathability
Easy care
Fast Drying
Recyclability
Biodegradability as determined by the standard test method ASTM D5511
Our garments suffer no changes during the lifetime, even when stored, having a shelf life as long as conventional polyamides
Why are biodegradable fabrics sustainable? How does it help the environment?
Every product at the end of its usable life, when it is disposed of as waste, produces an impact on the environment. Products that are not biodegradable, more specifically, do not decompose after they have been landfilled, which of course is extremely detrimental in environmental terms. On the other hand, products with enhanced biodegradability, like Mana Threads fabrics, have a limited environmental impact because, after landfilling, they are turned into organic matter (biomass) and biogas which can become new resources of energy for the environment, as well as being used for combined heat and power production.
How does it work? What are the necessary conditions for its biodegradation?
The chemical structure of synthetic fibers, generally speaking, does not allow for bacterial penetration, which makes the degradation process more complex and slower. Mana Threads fabrics, on the other hand, are produced using enhanced polyamide, which – under landfill conditions – facilitates access and digestion of waste material by bacteria, thus accelerating the biodegradation process.
What happens if a consumer disposes of the product incorrectly?
In an outdoor environment, our fabrics are inert and decompose slowly. Therefore, if garments are disposed of incorrectly, it is advisable to collect it and send it to recycling or biodegradation in a landfill.
Since it is biodegradable, is it not likely to smell or deteriorate after use?
Every product at the end of its usable life, when it is disposed of as waste, produces an impact on the environment. Products that are not biodegradable, more specifically, do not decompose after they have been landfilled, which of course is extremely detrimental in environmental terms. On the other hand, products with enhanced biodegradability, like Mana Threads fabrics, have a limited environmental impact because, after landfilling, they are turned into organic matter (biomass) and biogas which can become new resources of energy for the environment, as well as being used for combined heat and power production.
Is this product free of toxic substances?
Yes, definitely. All of our fabrics are indeed Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Class 1 certified, to guarantee the absence of substances which could harm the health of adults, children and babies. Oeko-Tex is actually the independent control and certification system which certifies the safety of textile products for human use.
