Mana Threads Essential Worker Appreciation: Stephanie Philips

Every Tuesday, Mana Threads will be highlighting some of the essential workers within our Mana Threads community. These ladies are courageous, hardworking, selfless, and inspiring. Read more about our Essential Worker Appreciation program here.

This is Stephanie Philips' story.

Who are you?

My name is Stephanie Phillips and I work in a Cardiovascular Cath Lab at a small community hospital in Maryland.

What do you do for work?

I am a Licensed Radiologic Technologist and a Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist.

During this time of COVID-19, we are mainly seeing patients in our lab who are in somewhat of an emergency need of a procedure.  We see heart attack patients as well as people needing pacemakers and we perform Radiology procedures like nephrostomy tube placements, PICC lines, Perm Cath placements for dialysis among other things.

What has been the hardest part of being an essential worker and working on the frontline during COVID-19?

The hardest part of being an essential worker during this time is coming into contact with a patient that has arrived for an emergency and you don’t know if they could possibly be COVID positive or not.  Because of this, we have decided in our lab to treat every patient as if they were positive.  Because we have adopted this mindset, the most difficult thing is having to wear the N95 along with another mask, face shield, two gowns, and double gloves.  It becomes somewhat difficult to breathe and function with all of the extra layers on.

What has been the most rewarding part of being an essential worker and working on the frontline during COVID-19?

My job is rewarding on a daily basis whether it’s during this trying time or not.  Everything we do in our lab is because a patient needs the procedure for their health and healing.

Name three things you can't wait to do once states open back up?

Once the states open back up, I am going to be cautious about going out.  I am nervous that opening stores and such will cause a surge in cases and we are going to be back in the same place we are now within 6 months.  With that being said, I am looking forward to going out to dinner and having a drink and going into a store to buy items that I need.

Tell us a little bit about yourself, outside of work.

When I’m not working, I try to be physically active.  I am a runner and seem to always be training for a race.  I know Mana Threads because I bought a shirt at the Marine Corps Marathon Expo a few years ago.  I love your line of running gear!

Show your appreciation with us

Mana Threads created a virtual thank you card for all of you to be able to personally thank them. Giving thanks, along with words of encouragement, helps them stay strong while they continue to help this country and everyone in it.

We hope you join us in celebrating the essential workers within all of our communities.

Thanks again for supporting Mana Threads and our Essential Workers.

With love and passion,
